ERGO™

Ergonomics is the science that optimises the interaction between people and their environment according to the principle of adapting the task to the person. It entails the study of physical, cognitive, and the emotional relationship people have with a device. For a hand tool to be ergonomic it must be perfectly suited to the task, the user, and the environment.
An alarming 52% of work related health problems come from Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD), MSD encapsulates a variety of conditions affecting the muscles, bones, and joints.
Bahco created the ERGO™ range of hand tools to mitigate against MSD’s. A Bahco ERGO™ hand tool will fit the hand like no other, which means that less force is required to grip the tool effectively. This in turn allows the muscles to relax periodically which reduces the risk of static muscle fatigue.
ERGO™ hand tools are also designed with easy to use locking and adjusting mechanisms, which reduces the chance of injury. Whilst an important aspect of any ERGO™ hand tool is the handle; it is important to know that an ERGO™ tool is ergonomic in it’s entirety.
So far there are some 500 Bahco ERGO™ tools. The ERGO™ process is a scientific approach to develop ergonomic tools. It takes a minimum of 2 years for a tool to graduate from this process. To keep Bahco at the forefront of ergonomic hand tool design, each tool undergoes a rigorous 3 step process that ensures that it has the right to bear the ERGO™ brand name.
This user centred design process is facilitated by Ergonomists and Industrial Designers who apply a scientific methodology to the creation, compliance, and quality assurance of each tool.
The Observation stage of the process creates a foundation for product development. It involves end user research to gain insights on the task performed by the tool, how it is likely to be handled, by whom, and in what environment. The Experimental stage entails the creation of a prototype that is tested, the results are then analysed. Additional prototypes are then created based on the results which are further tested and analysed. The Definition stage is the last in this process.
At this stage the final design is made based on the previous studies and the product specifications and other documentation is prepared for the hand tool to go into production. This process ensures that every tool carrying the ERGO™ brand lives up to design and production values Bahco have become known for over the last 150 years.
The results of the Bahco ERGO™ process can be seen across numerous product categories including Pliers, Screwdrivers, the Interchangeable Handsaw System, Scrapers, Ratchets, Pipe Wrenches, Combination Pliers and may other hand tools within the range.
Bahco’s ERGO™ Pliers are an outcome of the ERGO™ scientific process. The handles have a two component combination; they have a thermoplastic surface on tough polypropylene. The combination of these elements and the ERGO™ design process ensures that the user enjoys a strong grip without straining the muscles and bones in the hand. In addition the handles are comfortable, and are highly slip resistant; their shape allows optimal use of the tool in many positions.
The heads are designed to allow the user greater accessibility; the jaws are designed without the sharp edges that can cut the user, whilst offering strength and stability.
The Bahco ERGO™ Screwdriver is easy to use, more comfortable to hold, and highly functional. The large rounded end lets the user apply force without hurting the palm of their hand. It features soft, high frictional material with a rigid surface that allows for a strong grip with the maximum grip, even when the users hand is oily. This screwdriver has only rounded edges which eliminates any pressure points, and the length of the handle’s neck ensures that fingers are always correctly positioned
for quick turning and precision control. It reduces muscle tension and risk of accidents and injuries.
ERGO™ hand tools have won awards globally including the Reddot Award, the Japanese Good Design Award, awards from The Industrial Designers Society of America, the Design S – Sweden’s leading design award and many others.
Bahco’s ERGO™ range of hand tools is best in class. This ensures the user can be safe, productive, and profitable.
